I have asked a similar question before, but didn’t get a clear answer…..
We got my dog from the pound, and were told she has a Upper Respitory Infection. We took her to our vet after her nose started running green and she had a hard time breathing… She was given Doxycycline, and a bunch of vitamins, and seemed fine the next day with just a little CLEAR liquid comming from the nose.
The doctor however told us she might have Distemper……..
I have two other dogs, who are my babies.
My chihuahua isnt showing any signs of being sick, but my Cairn Terrier got a green runny nose.
I placed them both on the Doxyclcline just to be safe, and once again
my Cairn just has the CLEAR very thin drippy nose.
I have been soooo paranoid that my dogs have distemper.
I have been checking their pads everyday.
The new dog has rough feet, but not hard paws, they just feel like they need a nice pedicure.
She is still doing a bit of the inward sneezing thing, but her nose is pretty much not running.
Everyone has a great appetite, everyone has nomal fecal matter.
Although both sick dogs have thrown up a bit of clear liquid- Im thinking they are both just drinking too fast… Like they choke on it.
I am just very worried that they might have distemper…
We have a follow up vet appointemnt this week- but I am really concerned.
We have had the new dog for 2 weeks this Friday-
Wouldnt the symptoms be more severe?Pleaseee help me calm down.
Unfortunately I have experience w/ distemper (a pound dog that we thought had an upper respiratory infection).
1. Distemper is highly contagious. Are all the dogs distemper vaccines up to date? You can request antibody titer tests if you are unsure.
2. Ask your vet to do a complete blood cell count. A low white blood cell count is indicative of a viral infection such as distemper.
3. Other tests for distemper can be tricky, but useful. They may be affected by recent vaccinations, which can cause a false positive. False negatives are also a possibility. However, in the absence of recent vaccinations, positive results are usually accurate. Ask your vet a lot of questions about each specific test and the accuracy of the results.
4. Symptoms for distemper are variable. They MAY include respiratory (sneezing, coughing, discharge), gastrointestinal (lack of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea), lethargy, epithelial (pustules on skin, hardened nose, paw pads), and/or neurological ("chewing gum" fits, seizures, weak limbed, etc.). You can find more information about symptoms searching online.
5. Treatment. Antibiotics will help if it is a bacterial URI. In distemper, they will only help prevent secondary infections, such as pneumonia. There is no cure for distemper. You just treat the symptoms. Dogs that progress to severe neurological symptoms have the worst prognosis.
PS – My distemper dog is doing well.

They have not been cared for properly-shots kept up.. ect. The lady is old, poor(she does not have enough food for herself nor heat this winter) mentally ill( maybe she hasn’t been diagnosed bc she refuses to see a doctor, but i am almost 96% positive she is schizophrenic) She cannot afford to feed the dogs and they go hungry often for days or weeks at a time. i am in college and poor myself sharing a one bedroom with other roomies. I called a few vets in the are but i cannot afford to help, 80$ was the least amount told to me for them both-the chow(65lbs) and weenie dog(30lbs).just guessing at the weight. the weenie dog has some kind of skin condition and is losing its hair and the chow’s teeth are rotted out (he cannot shew food)and walks with a terrible limp. I thought of helping her by taking the dogs out to the country to a friends and shooting them, but i don’t think i can do it(call me a sissy girl whatever) so if you know of any place in the area to help these poor suffering animals please respond. i will ignore any garbage from you ppl tellin me i am wrong to think of killing the animals, you haven’t seen them, they are in bad condition and its very sad and when you are poor, your poor and a vet is not an option unfortunatly, especially during the holidays.
i have called the SPCA for 7 weeks now, they always say they are too full and will not accept any animals. Payment plan is a little much..don’t forget i am a college student i have enough "payment plans" for everything already.
She doesn’t "neglect" them. She has had them for years but just does not have the means now to take care of them or herself really. when alll you have is 15$ and you buy cigarettes, cereal, milk and dogfood, and thats all you have til, the next kind person comes along to offer assistance. She is not a bad person, she just isn’t all "there" in her head and she can’t help that, but she does love her animals. sometimes though, love is not enough. you need money.
Here are phone numbers of seven of your local animal wellfare organizations:

Surely one of them will be able to help.
Thank you for being the advocate for these dogs.

Ok I read a question in the zoology section, and I just couldnt believe what the person said..
"all of my dogs puppies have caught the red mange. I have tied Anna(momma) dog up in the barn. She still comes in to contact with the puppies, but only for about a half a minute when i go to feed her. besides that they sometimes sleep in the dog house she sleeps in. We are going to have to shoot the puppies. they have got it very badly. But what should i do with Anna. The Vet says she does not have it….. but should i change the carpeting in her dog house? what should i do?"
http://ca.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070523073344AA5PiMb&r=w&pa=FZptHWf.BGRX3OFMhj1cU4z5cYV_wY676rWNatEjL97yKDuFzeAvjL1DeM8ifLYk8N3XtBuuoXN.S.pQEA–&paid=answered#FcIvDmDtVThtTsF_DfJYq_txKOOEKj2HM5jbbnIrMeeGLBiWSWJ.
How could anyone even consider shooting puppies? not only that its like the vet didnt do anything at all to help or tell this person about "red mange" it can be cured, why kill them instead?
What do you think? I mean I answered and explained that it is curable and all the info about demodectic mange etc but I am sure they will still shoot the pups and it breaks my heart.. Why are people so heartless, I mean it sounds like they care about the dogs somewhat because they are asking but in the next sentece says they will "have to shoot the pups" well they dont HAVE to but it sounds like they will anyway, what a cruel world…
It IS a cruel world. I am thankful that there are people like you and so many other like-minded folks on Yahoo Answers and elsewhere.
Having Pets is a RESPONSIBILITY that is just as much work as having children. Maybe.. just maybe.. a little less becauz nt all children give unconditional love.
BREEDING Pets in this world that has a HUUUGE Pet Overpopulation problem is a sin. It is just adding to the terrible misery that is out there already.
However, not all people see the light, and thus consider shooting and drowiningand any other form of a horrible death as a way to "get rid of" an animal – an animal who just wants to live a life free from harm, as we humans also want.
I would consider those people who want to shoot those puppies as selfish, hearltless, irresponsible and cruel.
Also — shooting a pet in 42 states is a FELONY.
Sadly, you can tell a person as much as you want to tell them, and you can tell them ALL the RIGHT things, but that won;t guarantee that they will do it.
This is why I believe that MANDATORY Humane Education should be taught in ALl schools.
We resonate with ALL of creation and what we do to the animals and all living things is felt by ALL of us.
Pray for Anna and her puppies — if you are not a praying person, then think kind thoughts and send positive energy– they will feel it. And while you are at it, do the same for Anna’s "owners".
I will too.

I had a bag of chocolate chips in my room. a week ago my dog got sick was having diarrhea and was puking. today i was looking around and i couldn’t find the chocolate chips. i looked it up and those are the signs for a dog eating them. it was a week ago and she’s not doing it anymore but should i do something?
I normally don’t have chocolate in my room and also she’s not aloud in there but my mother might have gone in there for something and forgot to close the door. also she is a fairly big dog she’s a lab.
It’s too late to do anything. She has already passed it. But you are very lucky that your dog is still ok. Also, there are some stress on the organs, which only the vet could monitor with blood work. Nothing to worry about this time, but watch out for further disturbances.

Ok i just got a Great Dane, Germen Sheperd and she has just been diagnosed with Kennel Cough from our vet. (We have her on antibiotics though)
but my bf just got a 2 month old puppy, and i wont let my pup go around his bc i dont want his puppy getting sick! but i was wondering if his dog could get it from me, since im around my sick dog all day?
PLEASE HELP!
i really don’t want his tiny puppy to get it!!
especially bc of me!!
Oh YES! Kennel Cough is known as an airborne virus and can be spread by shoes and clothing, even on your skin. You have already exposed the pup to it and so has your BF if he has been to your place and then went home to his pup.
The thing is, the pup MAY not get it if the mother’s immunity is still high in the pup or if the pup had it’s first shots. There is an incubation period for the virus to show symptoms so you are not out of the woods yet. You’ll have to just wait and see. No sense putting a pup on anti-biotics if he is not going to catch the virus.

i don’t know how this happened as I was only drinking beer… I have been sick the past few weeks so maybe my body wasn’t up to it… please does anyone have a great hangover cure… my head is pounding… i’m contemplating the hair of the dog at the moment…
if it was only beer (domestic, with lots of preservatives and chemicals in it), then I’d say your hangover is caused by mostly dehydration and the preservatives in the beer. Best way to avoid this is to drink better beer and also plenty of water before you go to sleep.
If it was a microbrew kind of beer with mostly pure ingredients, then just the water before bed helps. (possibly with a multivitamin, if you’re not feeling queasy already).
To help get over this type of hangover, you have to rehydrate and kill your headache…take some naproxen or ibuprofen…(stay away from acetiminophen because combined with the alcohol still in your system, it causes more liver damage than either alcohol or tylenol separately).
Of course, if you’re also feeling low because you didn’t get enough sleep, then go back to sleep.
What really helps me also, is to get your metabolism going by eating something really spicy (as long as you’re not in danger of throwing up.) I like spicy soups, or just eat some spicy peppers, or the spicy v8 or if you want to add alcohol, drink a spicy bloody mary.

Ok we noticed yesterday He had blood in his poop, im worried, but there is allot of things that has happen since i got him, i got him Sunday before Christmas so im had him 3 days, he flew on a plane for 7 hours , came from Nashville TN and now lives in colder climate of north PA. But his diet has changed too he went from Dog food to the raw meat diet which im fed him fresh Deer… we both eat it, he eats it raw i eat it cooked. The deer is red by nature and has blood in it. So i was wondering if the blood in his poop could be from this? He acts normal no signs of sickness i think all the commotion has made him tired…He was jsut dewormed not too long ago like 3 weeks ago and has had his shots up to date including rabies. I will get him to a vet if it doesnt stop in next two days…but wonered if any one doing the raw meal diet have seen this when changing there pups! he is 4 months old by the way!!
I put the raw food in with his hard food, but he only eat the raw….guess maybe i should of blended it up!! or something!! so maybe i should put him back on dog food see if he gets better then reintroduce it to him?
All my deer meat has been frozen for about 3 weeks!! We process it our selfs so it has no fat in it!!
The blood in poop is NOT from the deer’s blood,.. it would have digested in your dog.
The blood is from the high pure meat content which his intestines are not use to without fillers.
Try slightly cooking the meat and adding rice, carrots cooked.
And some biscuits.
He has no choice but to eat what you give, but it is not agreeing with him so far.
Gd. luck.

My 8 year old West Highland Terrier was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver back in April and was given 6 months to live. So far he’s responded well to his meds and with routine fluid draining, has lived a life similar to how he was before his symptoms came up. We’ve been hopeful for some small amount of regeneration so that he might make it to ten years old.
Recently, however, he’s become very needy and "cuddly" in the evenings, wanting to be held and wanting his people close to him, acting uncomfortable without us close by.
Is this a reaction to his discomfort, some kind of acknowledgment of his sickness, or is this a behavior that dogs go through as they come closer to death? At this point all I want is for him to have the best possible life he can with whatever time is left, and a behavioral change indicates to me that something is different and possibly wrong. He has regular vet visits, so I’ll of course consult his doctor, but has anyone with a sick dog seen this behavior?
I’ve not experience this before. Whatever it is just, as I know you will because you sound like a very responsible owner, give him what he wants. You won’t regret the extra time you spend with him when heaven forbid his this to leave this world comes. You have my sympathy. Your dog is lucky to have such a good owner.

I love cats and dog, and I’m planning to get a dog in the near future. I loove them! But the problem is, I’m allergic to their furs. If they just sleep on my lap, guaranteed that I will be sick the next day.
So, is there any way I could get a dog even though I’m allergic to them? I want a dog so bad! Like something to cure my allergic, or something to be done to my dog so that i wouldn’t be allergic.
You can try regular over-the-counter allergy medications, prescription medications, shots, etc. Talk to your doctor about it.
You can also choose a breed of dog that is less likely to bother you – though it isn’t a guarantee! Try dogs that don’t shed and have hair instead of fur. Spend time with puppies and adults and see how you do (both with and without allergy medications.)
