We desperately need advice regarding our recently neutered and very sick male dog?

Help!!!
- On Tuesday, we had our six year old male dog neutered at a free clinic. He is a poodle/schitzu mix. At first, he was okay. We gave him the pain meds as scheduled.
-By Thursday, he was vomiting, had diarrhea, and would cry out in pain when we touched him.
-On Friday, I took off work to bring him to the vet, who diagnosed Gastric problems ans gave him fluids twice. I was told to bring our dog back on Saturday if he wasn’t better.
- On Saturday, when we brought him back to the vet we were then told to take him to the emergency clinic for more testing because they’d be closing at noon. The clinic took ex-rays gave him an enema for constipation and more fluids. When we got him home, he wasn’t able to finish his walk (less than a block). After having diarrhea again, he just sat down in the middle of the street and we had to carry him home. Once home, he was very lethargic and has had accidents.
=Today is Sunday and we are in shock! Our once happy, dancing dog is so sick that he has trouble standing. Honestly, he also seems traumatized by all that has happened to him. We’ve spent $600 and are being told that he may still need surgery. What did we do wrong? What can we do to help our little dog?

I cannot understand why he had an enema if he had previously had diarrhea. However the reason for him having what appeared to be diarrhea after the enema was the result of the enema. Your dog should not have walks at present and should be allowed to rest. If he wants to eat he should have a light diet.
When a dog is reluctant to eat NEVER TEMPT IT TO DO SO. Dogs know when to rest their digestive systems and you should allow them to do this for at LEAST twenty four hours.
The following is what vets and experienced dog owners consider to be a light diet.
Boil fish or chicken, remove the skin and bones, mince or chop this and mix with soggy rice. (soggy rice is overcooked rice using extra water) Or scramble eggs in water, never use milk or butter. Even a healthy dog has problems digesting cow’s milk.

When a dog has diarrhea, other health issues or after surgery a light diet is important. The dog should be given five very small meals a day for several days consisting of the above. When it is ready for its normal food, just small amount of this should be given and it should have several small meals a day for about seven days.

If you dog has a high temperature regardless of the fact that he is drinking he will become dehydrated, consequently he should be given electrolytes. Even if his temperature is not high he will become dehydrated if he has vomited and had diarrhea. Phone the vet now and ask for sachets of electrolytes and a syringe THIS IS VITAL. Often vets do not suggest this because they prefer to admit the dog and increase their profits. I think that you will see results after he has had electrolytes.

Administer the electrolytes with the dog’s nose tipped to the floor and just use a small amount every ten minutes and keep doing this. If you cannot get to the vets a chemist/drug store will advise you on using electrolytes which are manufactured for babies.

What makes people ask stupid questions about their dog when it’s in the middle of a crises?

I am a dog owner. How much sense does it take for people to call a vet when their dog is hurt or sick? Instead their asking for cures and advice. What do you think?

Many of the askers are minors, and can not take the dog to the vet, and have uncaring parents.. Many are in countries that do not have vets in every town..some have been from Alaska, where vets can be 400 miles apart..Many love their dogs, but have no money..(there are services to give medical aid to people/children who have no money, but there is no state aid for pets)

For those that do not have any answers, the best procedure would be to just ignore the question, or offer a word of encouragement..
There ARE a few vet students and even ER vets, and other people knowledgeable in pet first aid, that come to this forum…So, often there IS on-line help..

We can not be the judges of other’s situatons, but owe respect to all….especially our fellow pet lovers.

Don’t judge, so that you won’t be judged. (Matt 7:1)

Questions about sick dogs and puppies….?

Does anyone else find it…. scary and appalling… that people with sick puppies or dogs, (throwing up, crying in pain, refusing food for days! etc) waste time coming to a Q & A site to ask a bunch of strangers about it; strangers who can’t diagnose someone’s pet on line– instead of taking their dog to the darn VET??!!
What is wrong with these people?

some are trolls and some are kids who need info to give to parents to convince them to go to vet. Also with gas prices up etc some are barely making it if that and are hoping for miricle answer… soemtimes there is help to cut costs at least.

adn sometimes they just need info so they don’t feel dumb while talking with the vet… they need to know if vet knows stuff etc. Figure it doesn’t hurt to answer.

Sick dog, urgent please!?

I have a dog who is allergic to everything. I could not believe that a dog could be so sickly! Now she’s costing us loads of money. 100 dollars a bag for special dog food, 200 dollars every visit and more money for prescriptions. I’m the daughter of the household and my mother just can’t afford it. she makes more than alot of people but this is just crazy. I love this dog more than anything. But we’re spending more on her than we are on ourselves! And we have to vaccuum every day, er hair is falling out! We can’t go out and do fun stuff that cost money anymore, and I havent bought new clothes in a hell of a long time. It’s just crazy. Plus she’s digging holes and that could get us evicted. Sorry but I wont be poor and homeless for a dog.

What I’m asking is if you can tell me or know of any websites that coul give us things we can do at home to cure skin rashes, severe hair loss, and ear/eye infections. Otherwise she goes, and I dont know who will take her in, if anyone.
Well basically what she has is allergies to everything. She can’t eat any real food we don’t think, and the food we give her is just formula… you know like the filler stuff. What’s really maddening is that everytime we need to get another bottle of meds we have to go in the vets and get her checked out first which is 200 dollars on top of it. And yes she is a purebred.

As for the people saying I’m materialistic or that I don’t love my dog are crazy. I love this dog so much. This dog is my only friend right now. She’s done so much for me. But when your clothes are falling a friggin part and you’re scared to spend $2.35 a bus to go anywhere so you walk for hours instead, and your having a hard time paying for school things and all of that, even when you’re bringing in 500 dollars a week EASY, yeah there’s a problem there, and you have to think what is most important!
And another kicker is that the food and the meds never eve really worked that much! She gets like these bubbles in her ears with leaky stuff and her pink skin on her belly is dark and scaly, it’s so horrible. Soon I think she’ll be bald if she sheds like she doesn, we find chunks on the floor. Sorry I keep ranting but I just can’t believe this situation.

As much as I love animals, there are limits, and I think spending more on a dog that the rest of the household is unreasonable. Is your dog a purebred? If so, sometimes there are purebred rescue groups that may take your dog in. You may want to try checking with the drug companies to see if that have any special programs, also see if ordering her creams and meds online are cheaper, usually the cost way more at the vets office.
If you are unable to get any assistance with all of the special things your dog needs, you may need to consider giving her up, and you are right- she may not find a home. If you have to do this, you need to remember that you have done everything possible for her, and that you are just not able to do so any longer.
Don’t let anyone make you feel bad or irresponsible for it. If you can’t afford it, you can’t afford it.
Good luck, this is a really tough position to be in.

Found a tick on my dog! It was attached. What signs should I be aware of if he was going to get sick?

We think the tick got on him yesterday. My dog is a minature poodle with a weak immune system. We only use the flea and tick meds in the months May – November. (Ticks normally don’t come out around here until closer to June)

Obviously the ticks came out early and he wasn’t on the meds.

We went ahead and gave him and our other dog the flea/tick preventative today after this.

Before I found the tick on my dog he did have runny stool….but I thought it had something to do with the hot weather (its been in the 80s that past 3 days)

I will be starting a job tomorrow and my husband will be home with the dogs…..

What kind of behavior do we need to be watching for to make sure he isn’t sick?

What symptoms warrant a vet visit?

Thanks
ADD: He is acting fine now

Keep an eye out for any behavioral changes such as lethargy, low appetite, change in bowel movements, difficulty getting up and down, sleeping more than usual, restlessness and of course more obvious things like vomiting, lameness, personality change, etc. and contact your vet as soon as possible if any changes occur.

Best wishes~

My dog is sick?/ depressed?/ spoiled?

The vet recently diagnosed my 6 year old dog with diabetes. Instead of getting his usual meal of regular dog food with leftovers, he could only eat the diabetic dog food. The vet later said we could feed him unseasoned, boiled chicken. He wouldn’t eat (anything), and we found out he had a severe ear infection. Gave him medication for the infection, and gave him the canned food because of his difficulty eating. Later he became lethargic and the vet dismissed diabetes, so he said to give him his regular dog food, which he isn’t eating, along with all canned foods, and only bits of leftovers. Throughout the ordeal, he has become weaker and more lethargic. He’s stopped eating nearly all food, and he’s lost major weight (visible curves in his skull and ribs) I’ve suspected that it could be a jaw/tooth problem, but he’s not showing any sensitivity. I’m wondering if this is a serious condition, or if he’s picky. He’ll be at the vet tommorow, regardless.

a dog will not starve itself, it’s a medical problem if your current vet still finds nothing wrong then take it to another vet asap

until then just comfort him and make him as comfortable as possible.

My dog is very sick – can I freeze him?

My chihuahua has an inoperable brain tumor. The vet told me that with medicine he will make it another year, although he’s going to start acting funny. Can I freeze him, like Walt Disney, until veterinary science finds a cure? Do I need to go somewhere, or just get like a chest freezer for the basement?

If this question isn’t meant as a joke, which I’m pretty sure it is, then dear Asker, no, you cannot freeze your dog. It’s a dumb question, I’m sorry for being rude. It’s impossible to freeze a live body and revive it. When the body freezes, ice crystals form in the muscle tissue thus destroying it. Scientists are studying the abilities of certain animals, like a type of frog whose name I forget, that freezes over in the winter, remains covered in ice and snow, and with the comming of spring, revives itself, somehow managing to jumpstart its own heart. Experts are trying to unlock the secrets of these kind of abilities certain animals have, hopefully to help safely freeze human beings in the future.
I’d put your dog to sleep. If you humanely euthanize your pet, you’re putting their well-being and comfort before your own. Maybe putting your dog down before he or she starts to suffer, is the most responsible decision.

Sick Dog – vomitting drooling right eye closing?

We rescued a dog from the pound 2 months ago. She was fine until recently when she started showing these symptoms: vomiting excessive drooling, loss of appetite, right eye is closing, slightly abnormal behavior (pawing at sheets), and, i’m not the expert, but her stools look to me like there might be some blood. Just kind of reddish at end while normally it has been healthy looking. Drooling was the first sign.

No diarrhea.

We have one other dog and he is fine. We have scheduled a vet visit in three days, but i want to know now what it is likely to be.

I’m guessing periodontal disease since she has some plaque buildup.

this is a lot more than periodontal disease. the drooling goes hand in hand with the vomiting. when a dog is nauseous they tend to drool. i would think that she needs to be seen before three days. call your vet in the morning and tell them that you are really concerned and want to know if there is anyway they could get you in sooner. most will do this and actually leave slots open for just this occasion. good luck and hope she feels better soon

How do I know if my dog is in pain?

I just asked another question (under my sister’s name cause I didn’t realize I wasn’t signed in) about my sick dog that has this bloat disorder. So I’m 18 and my parents won’t take my dog to the vet cause they’re too cheap. We tried to find a cheap place to take her like the humaine society but they’re still too expensive. And also my parents want her to die peacefully at home…but the problem is, is that I don’t want her to be in a lot of pain. I’ve cried buckets of tears trying to get my parents to at least get her diagnosed but they say that if she’s going to die anyway, then there’s no point. So how do I know if she’s in pain? And what can I do to help her. So far, she’s thrown up twice, doesn’t really eat that much, and is breathing weird. Please help!

You can look at my original question here if you like: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AgugaDCrM7BOR8_ZvYGIbcQjzKIX;_ylv=3?qid=20070917093342AAF5FGF

Let your parents know that she will not die a peaceful death at home as they think. When a dog is in pain they will start to pant very heavily.

"The condition is rapidly fatal in dogs, causing shock, coma, and death within 6-12 hours. Always consult your dog’s vet as he or she can take x-rays of the abdomen to confirm the diagnosis. It is characterized by stomach enlargement due to extreme gas and or dilation.

Dilation may follow by "volvulus" a twisting rotation of the stomach. This closes both the esophagus and pylorus preventing the dog’s stomach from relieving gas by belching; it also blocks the food to advance into the intestines and stops the suffering dog from getting ride of the food by vomiting.

We have also found out that this twist compresses one of the major veins carrying blood to the heart and causes abnormal blood circulation through out the dog’s body, which causes shock and death. "

That doesn’t sound very peaceful to me.

Gastric Bloat is treatable, but if your parents are to cheap to have her treated, please urge them to do the right thing and help her out of her pain humanely. My heart goes out to you…….
