Can people get sick from sick dogs?

Recently my sister got a dog from the pound. Now she got diagnosed with kennel cough or something like that. And like most of my are getting sick/colds. So my mom is now trying to blame my sister new dog. So my question is can dogs get people sick.

Dogs can spread diseases to humans. But most likely you guys had the common cold which is a virus, while kennel cough is a bacterial disease, Bordetella. Humans can get bordetella but it’s going to be an immunocompromised person (AIDS, elderly, babies). So unless your whole family is immunocompromised..

Things dogs can spread to humans are:
rabies
toxoplasmosis (single celled parasite)
Roundworm/hooks
ringworm
mange
leptospirosis
Campylobacter/Salmonella
Cryptosporidium

Laboratory testing has confirmed that samples of Full-Cut Pig Ears dog treats sold by BJ’s Wholesale Club in 25-count packages under the "Berkley & Jensen" brand with no lot number and only the expiration advisory "BEST IF USED BY 2009" (without referencing a specific month) were contaminated with Salmonella. Additional testing of other pig ear dog treats from shipments during the above time period has not revealed any additional evidence of Salmonella contamination, but Petrapport nonetheless is voluntarily recalling them out of an abundance of caution due to concern that the pig ears imported during this period may not have been effectively irradiated for Salmonella before shipment from Chile.

The voluntary recall includes dog treats sold by BJ’s Wholesale Club in its 25-count packages of "Berkley & Jensen" Full-Cut Pig Ears dog treats with no lot number and only the expiration advisories "BEST IF USED BY 2009" (without referencing a specific month) as well as "BEST IF USED BY SEPTEMBER 2009," "BEST IF USED BY OCTOBER 2009," "BEST IF USED BY NOVEMBER 2009," and "BEST IF USED BY DECEMBER 2009."

question about dog food for my sick dog..?

My dog was diagnosed with renal insufficiency last week. The vet suggested a food called canine k/d. but the problem with that is it is very very expensive. I love my dog, he is my baby. Now here is my question. He also said that I can find other dog foods that are lower in protein (less than 20%), and lower levels of phosphorus, sodium, and potassium. I have been looking at dog food labels all weekend both in stores and online. I cannot figure out what is considered low phosphorus, potassium and sodium. They don’t generally give a percentage, nor can I find anything online about what a recommended percentage is for a healthy dog for me to compare to (what a healthy dog would have vs. a dog with kidney problems). Anyone have any ideas or suggestions other than calling the vet? He is not in on Monday’s unless its emergency care. Thanks.

Hills k/d
Protein: 14.7%
Fat: 19.4%
Phosphorus: .24%
Sodium: .23%
Potassium: .67%

Here is a great article about phosphorus and protein in dog food:
http://raingoddess.com/dogfood/phos.html

I highly doubt you will be able to find a commercial dog food that has similar levels as Hills k/d. Part of the reason is that in order for a dog food to be certified as a complete balanced diet by the AAFCO, it must meet minimum standards for the well being of healthy dogs.

Prescription diets are prescription because they have nutrient levels that are either too high or too low for normal dogs to stay healthy. This is why you can only get prescription food from a vet. A prescription diet could make a healthy dog sick.

I encourage you to research kidney problems and diet in dogs. You will find a lot of contradictory advice and opinions, even among vets.

Although I am not a vet, my job is related to animal nutrition. From my research and experience, ingredients play a big part in dog diet, not just the nutrient analysis of the food. For example, protein can come from both meat and grains. Grain protein has a low digestibility and is only 50%-75% usable by a dog’s body. Meat protein has a high digestibility and is 90%-95% usable by the body. It is safer to feed a food with protein coming from meat and best to avoid protein coming form grain.

Water is another very important factor in kidney health. A dry food diet concentrates nutrients and can allow them to build in places like the kidneys unless there is enough water to flush them out. A diet with a high water content, like a canned food or raw meat diet, will more evenly distribute proteins and nutrients throughout the body and help prevent kidney and bladder problems.

There are also supplements on the market that help support kidney health. A very good one is Wapiti Labs Renal Formula. It is very reasonably priced too.

What is considered to be low protein and nutrient levels varies by your dog’s life stage. Generally speaking, 20% or less for protein and .7% or less for phosphorus.

If you want to switch off of prescription, I would look into the following brands to find something that works for your dog. The websites for these companies usually have very detailed nutrient information available.

Innova (Natura)
Natural Balance
Wellness
Go! Natural
Solid Gold
Canidae

how to prevent/cure a dog ear infection?

i have a maltese dog and it has an ear infection! ]: im so sad!
its the second time my dog got it, and the inside of his ear has like dried blood looking things/little red grainy stuff inside

i cleaned her ear and put ear mite treatment in it, but i dont know if its the best way to help!
when i clean her ear, she tries to bite me and get really mad, so i had to hold her down really firmly to clean her ear
i also pulled out some of the inner ear hair (that had alot of the red stuff on it) , cause my vet told me that i should do it when my dog has an infection

is it an allergy thing? do i need to change his food? i read other answers that it might have to do with his food…that the food might be giving her allergies > ear infection..
right now shes eating Pedigree food with the "meaty inside nuggets"

please help my poor doggy! im really scared that she’ll get really sick ]’:
i dont want to go to the vet really cause it costs so much and my vet place is soo far!

help please! ty~
okay just because my dog has an ear infection doesnt mean i am a "cruel & selfish" owner (plynn_03 ) thats just harsh, youre being cruel yourself

i keep my dog’s ears clean and somehow my dog got an infection and im just asking for some tips to help him get better, not judgmental/rude comments

Yes it could have to do with food, it could also be a yeast infection. Schedule an appt, the dog may have to be put under to really clean and determine the source.

Food…. if you can buy it at the grocery store DON’T FEED IT TO YOUR DOG!!!! Wheat is the #1 allergy for dogs, and it will generally show up at the ears. red inflamed ears, itchy skin. Dull coat all signs. (note they do not have to have all 3 signs)

Move your dog to a holistic formula, duck & potatoe, fish and potato

brands,

Pro Plan
Solid Gold
Timberwolf
Evo

Is it possible for a dog to vomit there poop?

My neighbor’s dog did not poop for a day and the next day she told me that her dog vomited poop. Is that really possible and is this a sign of a sick dog? why didi it happen?

No, it is totally impossible for that to happen, the dog just vomited up something it had eaten that was brown in colour. Sometimes dogs that vomit are sick, they may have eaten something they shouldn’t have, or they have caught an illness. sometimes they vomit if they have eaten to much, eaten to fast or eaten some grass that has made it sick.

how sick should my dog with bone cancer be 2 months after her diagnose?

I’m very sorry about your dog, Osteosarcoma is a b*tch.

All dogs are different and respond to treatments differently.

There really isn’t any way we can answer this for you – it’s really a question for your vet. A lot will depend on what you’ve done (amputation, chemo, etc) and how advanced the cancer is/was when found.

My dog, Aslan is sick, and I am really succeeding in curing him, but do you have any tips?

He is throwing up and not eating for days, and I am very worried for him! He is just over a year old.
Well, I have been feeding him garlic, and he is very brittle after that for a few days but then he gets all hurting again, and I think it is because he is eating gross stuff when I walk him, and he jsut throws up and poops all over the place!
I am feeding him garlic and that really helps him for a few days but then he get s all sick again and I am pretty sure this because he eats weird stuff when I am walking him. He just throws up and poops in random places!
Oops, sorry for writing this additional stuff twice!
Uh, oh, my dad just said that he has been feeling waaay better and I just didn’t realize that. He is kind of in a bad mood because it’s late. You know how men are. Leave them alone when hungry and tired, I am tellin’ ya! LOL

You say you are "succeeding in curing him", but how? Take him to the vet is my only advice, because I can’t see him, and I can’t be sure what’s wrong with him. He may have been poisoned by something. Good luck.

dog swallowed a dime size amount of cortizone cream – dog weights about 85 lbs. But shows no signs of sick?

He seems heavy enough (and I’m sure he’s fine), but you should take him to the vet just in case.

Better safe than sorry.

Need serious advice about our sick dog please.?

Our 2½ year old chihuhua/shitzu mix had a seizure last night. It was his 2nd in 3 months. He came out of it ok, but today his ears are hot and red and so is his head. Does anyone know if these symptoms indicate a particular problem? I am a single Mom and do not have the hundreds of dollars it will take to diagnose our dog. I would like any information I can get in order to make an informed decision as to what to do. The easy answer is to go see the vet as there is obviously something wrong, but I would like to know if anyone knows how serious this may actually become for him and us before I go. Thank you so much!

I’m sorry to hear about your puppy. Your right about the vet expense, they will want to take blood work and lab cost and medication etc. 2 seizures in 3 months umm, could be his diet, have you noticed this happens when he eats certain foods? You might pull up dog seizures on the enternet and get some idea of what is going on. Again. I’m sorry for you and your children.
